Epilogue DD

Runorata Family[]

In Newark, New Jersey, one of Gustavo Bagetta's former subordinates addresses Bartolo Runorata, the current head of the Runorata Family. He informs Bartolo that Gustavo miraculously survived his many sustained injuries from the earlier raid on The Daily Days. He further explains that while the police are starting to suspect Gustavo of the Genoard Family's murders and he'll likely be going to prison for them, the arrangements have been put in place to protect the rest of the family from scrutiny.

Bartolo nods in acknowledgement, and says that Gustavo was probably lucky, since several larger crime families wanted Gustavo to be dealt with, and getting put in prison is a better alternative to their methods. Bartolo ruefully muses on the rules of Lucky Luciano, who's recently made it difficult for any significant crime families to kill subordinates or traitors without consulting his council first, but concedes that Luciano will probably be around for a while. He comments on how it may be rough for both the Runorata Family and the Gandor Family.

Bartolo tells the Runorata subordinate to establish a nonagression pact with the Gandors. When the subordinate questions their strength, Bartolo doubles down, reprimanding him for not treating the Gandor family as equals, since underestimating an enemy could lead to disaster. As Bartolo's grandson approaches him, he briefly speculates on the future relationship between the two families, then comments on Keith Gandor's resoluteness and eloquence.

Gandor Family[]

On January 5th, Keith finally gets to go home after finishing a phone call, and Berga thinks to himself that Keith talks a lot when he's on the phone. Meanwhile, a gloomy Luck watches from the couch as Tick Jefferson and the Mexican assassin who'd joined up with the family go back and forth in the kitchen about cutting food with scissors. While the rest of the family is confused about the woman, Luck shooes them away; even though he's also frustrated to have someone else that odd in the family, he appreciates having someone else who's skilled in combat on their side. Luck then inwardly berates Claire Stanfield for being self-centered and leaving as soon as the job was over, but concedes that he himself is probably the most self-centered of all, and begins to reflect on the situation immediately following the raid on the Daily Days.

Eve Genoard is showered in apologies by Benjamin and Samantha, and the three of them are about to leave when Luck approaches Eve. He hands her a map with a marked location, telling her to do as she likes with Dallas whenever she thinks Luck's pain has disappeared. Eve attempts to say something to him, but he cuts her off, telling her anything she could say will just annoy him.

Back in the present, Luck reflects on how unfair it is to his brothers and his dead subordinates that he'd given Dallas's location away so easily, but consoles himself with the thought that Eve probably wouldn't be able to pull him up from the river anyway, and that he'd only given her his location so she wouldn't hold a grudge against him. However, he acknowledges that he could have accomplished the same thing by giving her a false location and considers that he may be "too soft" for this business.

Right before he decides to distract himself with a book, Luck considers that he might have been jealous of Eve's drive and emotion, since he'll never be able to "prepare to die" like that again.

The Wealthy[]

Isaac & Miria pester Firo Prochainezo to help them line up dominos, which Firo refuses to do. He asks then what the fun of lining up dominos is if they just intend to knock them down again, and Isaac and Miria say that lining them up is fun because watching them all fall down is fun. They say that it makes other people watching happy too, and Firo concedes that lining up dominos might just be the perfect game for the two of them, since it's like their lives; Isaac and Miria barrel through other people's lives, knocking down all sorts of tiles as they please. Having considered this, Firo agrees to help them, and he scoops a handful of dominos out of a barrel.

On Millionaires' Row, Fang Lin-Shan brings dinner to a distracted Eve, saying people can only be unconditionally happy when they're eating good food. Eve tries the food and smiles for the first time since the raid, commenting that this food is as good as Kate Gandor's. Benjamin and Samantha watch her from the sidelines, happy to see her in better spirits.

Despite the distraction, Eve continues to think about what she should do regarding Dallas. As she debates how she can save Dallas while also respecting the Gandor Family, she comes to the realization that she'd only been thinking about her own happiness, and resolves to just save Dallas as soon as possible, deciding not to let her hesitation get in the way of anyone's happiness again.

Begg[]

In August of 2002, Maiza Avaro visits Begg Garrott in the hospital he's been in for several decades. Begg's caretaker informs Maiza that he's been almost catatonic ever since the death of Bartolo Runorata; despite losing his spirit in 1932, Begg had continued to make drugs out of loyalty to his boss.

Maiza asks Begg if he remembers him, but recieves no response, so he instead asks Begg's caretaker who's dealing with his hospital expenses. The caretaker responds that the head of the Genoard family has consistently donated large sums of money for several generations to keep Begg hospitalized. The caretaker asks how Maiza knows Begg, only coming up with further questions when Maiza admits to being an old friend, since Begg hasn't aged for decades and has lived without even eating.

Maiza begins to talk to Begg about the development of drugs in the modern age, and how people still use them despite knowing they'll most likely die. As he carries on with other topics, Maiza slowly stops talking, and puts his right hand on Begg's forehead. Before he can devour him, though, Begg begins muttering, recreating a memory of showing Czeslaw Meyer around the Advena Avis on their voyage to America. Realizing that Begg is someplace that makes him happy, Maiza retracts his hand, telling Begg that he'll come again and beginning to leave. On his way out, Maiza hears Begg thank him for not eating him.

Outside, Czes asks after Begg, and Maiza tells him that Begg seems a little tired, but that he'll recover someday. The two of them get into a car and head back to New York.

Dope Addict[]

In January of 1932, Roy Maddock experiences a strange high where he's plagued by the feeling of missing something. As he realizes what he's missing is other people, he hears a voice calling out for him, which pulls him out of his high.

When he wakes up, he realizes he's in Fred's Clinic with Edith by his bedside. As he slowly comes to, Fred arrives to quickly examine him before leaving him alone with Edith and the two other patients. Roy quickly takes responsibility for the catastrophe that had brought him here, but Edith just expresses relief that he's alive, startling Roy by not calling him an idiot. She then brings up the truck he'd stolen, and Roy begins to catastrophize, thinking about going to jail. However, Edith tells him it's all been taken care of.

Roy asks what she means, and she tells him the Gandors intervened and set up an out-of-court settlement for him with the truck's owner by paying him off for the value of his truck. Roy protests that he doesn't have the kind of money for that, but Edith clarifies that the Gandors had given him a loan, and that despite the interest being bad, it would be possible to pay it off if he worked hard. Roy spirals into despair about falling into the jaws of the Gandors, but stops short as he notices Edith's hair is shorter.

When he comments on it, she calls him an idiot for taking so long to notice, and he's finally certain he's awake.
